The article “US Should Create Laws to Protect Social Media Users’ Data”, made me analyze the hard truth that the U.S. is behind on creating practical laws for the protection of it’s users. Now more than ever I have noticed after a web search ads pertaining to recent searches coincidently appear. The coincidence begins to feel like an invasion of privacy when considering the frequency of previously search-related ads which begin to appear while browsing the net. These alarming occurrences go to show the lack of privacy policies in place as technology continues to expand. This large problem has been analyzed by professionals for years, in 1988 experts realized the problems that could lay ahead with data, experts stated digital and personal data had to be regulated by law.
Twenty-one years later we are feeling the repercussions of not avidly finding a solution to this large problem. Efforts towards better policies can be seen throughout the European Union with implementations such as, the General Data Protection Regulation which requires data protection for the consumers. The United States, on the other hand, does not have a centralized federal law on data protection therefor each state carries different laws and procedures. This makes it difficult to deal with internet-based companies nationwide and worldwide which store information such as religion, race, sexuality, political party and much more.
